This is a summary of an hour long CBD lecture by Codie-Lyn Kahler who wrote a book called CBD Plant-Based Wellness.
** Is it dope? Nope **
CBD comes from a version of the cannabis sativa plant known as Hemp plant. It’s similar to the Marijuana plants that the cartels use but Nature’s Ultra uses hemp plants that are specifically for CBD. In my opinion it’s not a distinction worth focusing on. Marijuana plants can also produce CBD oil, Hemp plants can produce marijuana buds. Don’t sweat it. YL’s got you covered.
** Well, whooptie do… So what? **
These Cannabis plants produce a unique family of compounds called cannabinoids, some of which produce the “high” which may be experienced from consuming marijuana. In fact, the plants produce almost 500 compounds but the two cannabinoids produced in greatest quantity are Cannabinol (CBD) TetraHydroCannabinol (THC). Only THC is psychoactive. More on that later.
**Hard to Pronounce, harder to spell**
CBD effects the Endocannabinod system. This is a regulatory system with powerful effects on Endocrine (hormones), Nerves, Digestion (appetite & serotonin production), Pain, Stress, Brain (memory & temp control). Researchers are calling the Endocannabinod system “The great regulator” and “the new frontier of plant based medicine”
**Pain should be worried**
Pain messages are transmitted via neurotransmitters. Every time a nerve passes on the pain signal to another nerve, it can get distorted. Maybe it over reacts and signals too much pain, or not enough of another sensation. To smooth out these message distortions, nerves have CB1 and CB2 receptors (see below). For example, they can down-regulate a pain message that is too powerful. Doing so can correct errors like improper pain amplification experienced in people with chronic pain or fibromyalgia. Or, I assume, up regulate a signal to help with numbness. Another example is in the brain where epilepsy and seizures result from too much activity. CBD down regulates the activity and has been VERY helpful for epileptics.
**CB1 vs. CB2 receptors**
CB1 receptors – THC effects these.
Gives the high feeling and euphoria. Benefits some people medically. Most CB1 receptors are in the Central Nervous System (brain & spine) but also in the digestive system.
CB2 receptors – CBD effects these.
There are more of these throughout the body than CB1. Some CB2 receptors are in the brain but they’re mostly in the Immune, Digestive & Peripheral Nervous systems. The Peripheral Nervous system is where signals travel out to the body (skeletal muscle and organ control), and where information is collected and sent to the spine & brain (PAIN, temp, vibrations).
**Anxiety and depression**
These problems often come down to a serotonin problem. That’s why SSRI’s are so popular (serotonin re-uptake inhibitors). CBD’s effects on the digestive system causes an increase in serotonin. When your gut is off, your mood is off. This is why one of the most common uses of CDB is to help with anxiety and depression
**But I get the cheap stuff, it’s Full Spectrum bruh**
Oh it’s full spectrum alright, that’s how the THC sneaks in there and 100’s of other compounds. In their defense, the full spectrum CBD, which means whole plant product, does have added benefits. Hemp plants produce terpenes and flavonoids that have a synergistic effect when combined with CBD. But what else is in there? 20% of the CBD available online was found to have THC. Even though it’s required to contain less than 0.3% THC, it can show up in a drug test. Worse, THC can increase the likelihood of schizophrenia. So you can’t use it on kids, pets, or most jobs. While you do get the Terpenes with full spectrum CBD, the fact that there are 100’s of compounds means it’s hard to control and regulate a standardized product. This could be why 70% of CBD is mislabeled for it’s content.
**Why Young Living’s CBD is the best**
We distill our CBD into a pure Isolate form. By pulling out the purest possible form of CBD we can ensure no THC. But we lose the Terpenes that competitors have in their full spectrum CBD. Hang on sucker… Essential oils are loaded with Terpenes and other beneficial compounds in their braggadocios full spectrum. Every Kit oil (except peppermint) has terpenes. Plus, by adding the oils we want, we can control and target specific problems. Call it a controlled-broad-spectrum. We add Orange for added relaxation, cancer and detox benefits. Add Cinnamon for killing bacteria causing a sore throat and increased sugar control (CBD is believed to help stabilize blood sugars). Add Peppermint for alertness, cardio boost, or added digestion benefits. Codie-Lyn Kahler recommended adding Copaiba for pain (topically with the muscle rub). But you get the idea. Plus, Nature’s Ultra was purchased by Young Living so you can bank on the purity. Purity is like a religion around here.
**How to use CBD **
EAT IT… You can ingest it in a capsule or put it in food but it’s faster to hold it under your tongue or swish it around for 60-90 seconds then swallow it. The full effect takes 30 minutes and can last 5 hours. It’s better to take it with food because it’s Fat Soluble. YL has added some healthy fats (MCT oil) because we need the fats so the body can absorb it and use it fully. Other companies’ Full spectrum is a liquid because it has lots of other things in it. Our pure CBD is almost a powder in isolate form. Unflavored CBD tastes like dirty leaves and deer poop. So we add a tiny bit of Stevia, Essential oil, MCT to make it taste good but don’t kid yourself. It’s not diluted. This is as potent of CBD as you can get. It’s 99% CBD. The other 1% is MCT, EO’s, and Stevia. And love.
TOPICALLY… You can use the dropper topically but joint balm is the bomb diggity. Apply either balm or liquid directly on joints, skin problems, dogs ears. Put it on top of oils to magnify the effect – especially on top of Cool Azul Pain Cream. Oils amplify the effects so take with Digize for digestion. Try Frankincense and Copaiba for joint pain. Any oil is better than no oil but look for oils with Terpenes to enhance CBD’s effect.
DOSAGE… For some people, 2 drops twice a day is too much. Others might need 10 drops twice a day.
Simple version – Start with 1-2 drops twice a day and go up from there until you find your sweet spot. Increase your dose until you get the results you want. If you have few hours of lower energy and/or diarrhea, you took too much. Back it down, baby girl. It’s powerful! Which is good but start slow. Best time of day? Take it twice a day. Morning and night. Peak effect 30 min lasts 5 hours.
**500 vs 1000mg**
Simple version – Start with the 500mg. If you need more than 20 drops a day, move up to the 1000mg and cut your dose in half.
**History, legality, and Government overreach*
CBD has been around 100 years. Comes from Hemp which was REQUIRED by colonialists to be grown because it was so useful to make rope, paper, clothes, Birkenstocks & hacky sacks . But in 1970, the Controlled Substances Act labeled Hemp a Class 1 drug just like Marijuana. The 2018 Farm Bill redefined hemp making it legal to grow nationwide. Federally, hemp based CBD is legal in all 50 states but there are some quirky states laws. Research your state to double check. If you’re flying out of California, Oklahoma, TX, or Iowa, I wouldn’t put CBD in your carry on because some TSA agents are… uh… not very… they grope little kids and old ladies looking for explosives. I mean C’mon people, really? Just put it in your checked bag.
** How to research **
When doing research, there is a good chance that you’re getting CBD plus THC articles. It’s better to search for CB2.
No need to refrigerate it.
